Do I need a demolition permit for my New Orleans demo project?

Yes. The city of New Orleans requires that you have a demolition permit even if you have plans to rebuild on the property in the future.

How much does a demolition permit cost?

As of 2021, the fees associated with a demolition permit are as follows:

  • Demolition permit: $95 base fee + an additional $5 per every $1,000 of the total demolition cost
  • Neighborhood Conservation District Committee review (required for certain demolition jobs): $250 for residential buildings and structures and $500 for all commercial buildings and structures or multi-family units
  • Certificate of Appropriateness (required for certain demolition jobs): a 50% surcharge will be added to the base permit cost

Note: If the demolition was started prior to a permit being obtained, a 500% penalty surcharge will also be applied.
