What are the requirements to obtain a demolition permit in the city of Detroit?
It depends on whether you or the contractor pull the permit application. If you file the application, the following steps are required:
- Show proof that you own the property or structure
- Provide a notarized copy of your signature
- Show proof that all of your utilities have been (or will be) shut off prior to the demolition
- Obtain approval from the Zoning and Structural Division and City of Detroit Department of Public Works Street Maintenance and Traffic Engineering Sections
- Have your application processed at the Building Permits Counter
- Pay all the necessary permit and application fees at the time you file the application
If you wish to have the contractor you hire complete the permit application process for you, the following will be required:
- They must be able to show proof that they are an approved City of Detroit Wrecking Contractor, along with proof of licensing in the State of Michigan
- A copy of the owners notarized signature must be provided
- Approval must be obtained from the City of Detroit Street Maintenance and Traffic Engineering Department
- Proof of clearance from your utility company must be provided
- Application approval must be obtained at the city Zoning and Structural Division
- The application must be processed at the Building Permits Counter and all fees must be paid at this time
